South Africa has just launched a brand-new social media platform – and it’s all about sport.

Called Discover Sport, this platform is designed to give athletes of all backgrounds a space to share their stories, connect with fans, and grow their personal brand. Whether you’re a pro athlete, weekend warrior, or simply a sports fan, this platform could change how you experience local and global sport.

A Space Just for Sport

Launched by the same team behind some of South Africa’s leading streaming services, Discover Sport is made for mobile and free to use. You can access it on discoversport.com, or download the app for Android or iOS.

One of the platform’s biggest supporters is SuperSport, which is already creating content for it. It’s also backed by Sascoc – the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee – which represents SA at the Olympics, Paralympics, and Commonwealth Games.

But Discover Sport isn’t just for big-name teams or elite athletes. It’s built to give every athlete a voice, no matter their sport or skill level.

Shining a Light on Lesser-Known Sports

Not all sports get time on TV – and Discover Sport is trying to change that.

There’s a strong focus on sports that often get overlooked, like swimming, padel, chess, gymnastics, and showjumping. Athletes from these fields can now upload training clips, match highlights, behind-the-scenes moments, and more.

The platform also allows sports federations and content creators to share official footage, livestreams, and even documentaries, giving fans a closer look at their favourite sports and athletes.

Tools for Talent Scouts and Coaches

One unique feature is Discover Sport’s scouting tools. These are designed for coaches, agents, and scouts who are looking for up-and-coming talent.

They can follow athletes, get notifications (called “whistle alerts”) when new content is posted, and organise their favourite profiles into a scouting list. This makes it easier to find promising talent – no matter where they’re from or how much media coverage they get.

Helping Athletes Earn from Their Content

Discover Sport also helps athletes make money from the content they post.

If a post earns ad revenue, a big portion of it goes straight back to the athlete, their team, or their sports organisation. If an athlete already has a sponsor, that sponsor can even advertise on their posts, with most of the earnings going to the athlete.

This gives athletes a new way to earn income and build a sustainable career – something that’s especially valuable in less-commercialised sports.

What’s Already on the Platform

Even before its full launch, Discover Sport was already streaming live events. These included:

  • The 2025 Invictus Games
  • WBC World Championship Boxing
  • The South African Davis Cup
  • IBERCUP Youth Football
  • The World Games in Chengdu

You’ll also find plenty of short-form videos, similar to what you might see on TikTok or Instagram Reels – except it’s all focused on sport.

Global Access, Local Rewards

Although Discover Sport is based in South Africa, anyone in the world can sign up. But there’s one feature that’s only available locally (for now): ByteBucks. It’s a digital reward system that gives users points for interacting with content. These points can be used for special perks – and there are plans to roll it out globally in the future.

Why It Matters

There’s never been a dedicated social platform for sport in South Africa – until now.

Whether you’re a young athlete hoping to be discovered, a scout looking for fresh talent, or a fan wanting to follow your favourite local star, Discover Sport gives you the tools to do just that.

With strong local backing, a focus on inclusivity, and real opportunities for athletes to grow and earn, Discover Sport is more than just another app. It’s a new way to experience sport in South Africa and beyond.
